Fairy longhorn moths have a worldwide distribution and can be found over much of North America and Eurasia. In general, they are more plentiful in the Northern Hemisphere, but are distributed throughout the Neotropics, sub-Saharan Africa, South-East Asia and Australia.
Adelidae mostly comprise of species that have at least partially metallic patterns coloration and are diurnal feeding in the day on nectar from the flowers of herbaceous plants, sometimes swarming around the tips of branches with an undulating flight. Others have a drab coloration and are crepuscular. Fairy longhorn moths have a wingspan of 4–28 mm, and males often have especially long antennae 1–3 times as long as their forewing. Females insert their eggs into certain plants or just lay among leaf litter. The caterpillars make a case, completing their development on the ground.
