Family Curculionidae (Snout Beetle Weevil)

Curculionidae are commonly called snout beetles and what many of us are familiar as true weevils. They are one of the largest animal families with 83,000 species in 6,800 genera described globally. Most weevils have long, distinctly elbowed antennae that may fold into special grooves on the snout. Many have no wings, whereas others are excellent fliers. Most are less than 6 mm in length, although the largest exceed 80 mm. The majority of these true weevils feed exclusively on plants. The fleshy, legless larvae of most species feed only on a certain part of a plant, such as the flower head, seeds, fleshy fruits, stems, or roots. Many of the larvae tend to be specific feeders, feeding either on a single plant species or on closely related species. The adult weevils tend to be less specialized in their feeding habits.
