There are 1700 species of ironclade beetles in 190 genera and are found worldwide. Many species of the family feed on rotting wood or fungus associated with rotting wood. Some species in the subfamily Colydiinae are, however, predatory, or feed on living plant tissue such as roots, stems, flower stalks and fruit.
