Primates are a diverse order of mammals, divided into two groups. The strepsirrhines, which include the lemurs, galagos, and lorisids, and the haplorhines, which include the tarsiers and the simians (monkeys, apes, and humans).

Primates have relatively large brains to body size compared to other mammals, as well as an increased reliance on visual acuity at the expense of the senses, but less so in lorises and lemurs. Most primates also have opposable thumbs, an adaptation for grasping and climbing trees. Arboreal movements include leaping from tree to tree and swinging between branches of trees, while terrestrial locomotion techniques include walking on two limbs on all four limbs (knuckle-walking) in the case of chimpanzees and gorillas.

Primates are social of animals, forming pairs or family groups, with uni-male harems, and multi-male/multi-female groups. Primates have slower rates of development compared to similar sized mammals, reach maturity later, and living longer. Primates are also the most intelligent animals and tool usage have been recorded in many non-human primates and may communicate using facial and hand gestures, smells and vocalizations.
